Matson Logistics Mexico Fanfold

Matson Logistics MX, a leading U.S. intermodal rail and transportation solutions provider, has expanded its operations in Mexico with the launch of Matson Logistics MX. The new subsidiary, which began intra-Mexico operations in September 2024, offers intermodal rail brokerage services across the country, strengthening Matson Logistics MX's existing cross-border operations between Mexico, the U.S., and Canada.

Backed by over 20 years of cross-border experience and a legacy dating back to 1882 through its parent company, Matson Logistics MX Navigation, Matson Logistics MX is leveraging its expertise to meet the rising demand for domestic freight solutions within Mexico. The surge in nearshoring activity—as companies move manufacturing closer to North American markets—has accelerated the need for reliable logistics services that seamlessly connect production hubs with supply chains.

"We are expanding to offer both domestic intermodal and highway brokerage, either within the country or across the border to the United States. In the future, we will look to offer drayage and transportation for ocean imports into Mexico ports," shares Adriana Muñoz, General Director of Matson Logistics MX.

Strategic Rail Network Integration

Matson Logistics MX launched its operations utilizing Ferromex's Interpacific network—one of Mexico's leading rail corridors—and plans to extend its services to all major rail routes in the country. By creating synergies with key rail providers and transporters, Matson Logistics MX can offer customers enhanced flexibility, efficiency, and end-to-end logistics solutions.

Tailored Rail Transportation Solutions

Matson Logistics MX now provides customized rail transportation solutions through strategic partnerships with a network of trusted carriers. Whether clients require freight solutions due to customs complexities, delivery timelines, or specialized cargo needs, Matson Logistics MX ensures seamless execution by tailoring routes from origin to destination.

“Our goal is to deliver the same top-tier service that has earned us recognition as the number one intermodal rail service provider in the United States with the Quest for Quality Award,” Muñoz added.

Decades of Cross-Border Expertise

For cross-border shipments, its routes connect Nuevo León, Coahuila, Chihuahua, Tamaulipas, Baja California, Querétaro, San Luis Potosí, Guadalajara, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Mexico City, Puebla and Toluca with service to  Chicago, North and South California, Seattle, Vancouver, Toronto, and Montreal, as well as the southeastern and eastern regions of the United States.

"We move a wide variety of products, from household items, industrial products, consumer products, food, hazardous products, and Tier 1 and Tier 2 parts and manufacturing supplies for the automotive industry," says the executive.

Support for Mexico Port Volumes

Matson Logistics MX is analyzing the growth of ocean imports and exports moving through Mexico’s major international ports. Its parent entity, Matson, offers ocean service from Vietnam and China to Southern California, with onward transit throughout the 48 states.

"A challenge at the industry level is the congestion in the main ports within Mexico. We are developing logistics solutions to expedite the arrival of goods from Asia to Mexico. Additionally, we are putting together solutions for goods that arrive at Mexican ports and have their final destination within Mexico, the U.S., and Canada. We can manage the shipment from port to destination, including through customs, any needed storage, and multimodal transportation services, says Muñoz.

In the coming year, Matson Logistics MX will expand its rail partnerships to offer additional capacity, especially during peak season. Matson Logistics MX has its own fleet 53-foot intermodal containers, in addition to being able to access the ocean containers of its parent company and pooled containers managed by the railroads.
